Interface, which premiered during Glasgow International 2016, is an essayistic video performance that was developed in response to Smith’s film installation
The Horizontal Window (2016). The response reflects upon the relationship between cinematic and architectural framing devices, examining their formal qualities and the points where these two systems meet. Through layered archival and original moving image, Smith illustrates the history of glass manufacture with specific detail to its use in architecture and inside the camera apparatus. As with the artist's ongoing performance practice, prepared video and photographic footage is combined live with sound; text overlays; and subtle software interventions.
