Film Without a Past, excerpt
In 2002 the Finnish film director Aki Kaurismäki released Mies vailla menneisyyttä (The Man Without a Past), a film shot primarily in Helsinki. The narrative centres on a man (identified in the credits simply as M.) who loses his memory after being robbed and beaten in Kaisaniemi park near the central railway station. Film Without a Past (2012) makes a second erasure, stripping the original film is of its images. The remaining audio becomes the anchor for a new visual system that builds a montage language from association, retracing and expanding the streets, bars and façades of Kaurismäki's nostalgic Helsinki.
